Breaking Into and Succeeding as a Professional Concierge
Starting a Concierge Service
Starting a Personal or Corporate Concierge Service

Think only rich and famous people require concierge services? Think again! In ever increasing numbers, anyone from corporate millionaires to hot-shot celebrities to couples with two incomes but zero free time to single moms holding down two jobs, are enjoying the perks and time-saving benefits that personal concierge services offer.

Starting a successful concierge service hinges on a very basic premise: making every client feels like she or he is the most important person in the world. If you can do that, then you have an excellent shot at having what it takes to start your own personal concierge service business—and making it a success, no matter where you live.

Although personal concierge services are a fairly recent development, the number of companies that serve time-starved clients is mushrooming, right along with customer demand for such businesses.

In this field, as in most any other, it is prudent to remember the old adage, actions speak louder than words. That said, of course, a little publicity still goes a long way to get the message out about your services and to attract new clientele to your business—and keep them coming back for more.

According to Entrepreneur, one San Francisco-based concierge business saw its client base doubled in 1996 and continue to grow up to 50% annually for several years after that, while some 2,000 miles away, a Chicago concierge firm that began with 25 clients in 1997 grew to service more than 85 clients in just a few years.

In today’s competitive job market, employers are finding that they not only need to create a safe and supportive environment for their employees, but they also must give employees benefits that help them balance the demands of work and personal commitments. Some companies have discovered that their employees are putting in so much overtime and working such long hours that they don’t have enough hours left in a day to attend to personal business and responsibilities.

To be an “employer of choice” and maintain a competitive edge, companies are increasingly looking at employees as their most important asset and are instituting work/life policies and benefits on a company-wide scale.

Employers in certain fields, such as insurance, banking, and manufacturing, have found that offering help to their time-starved employees can boost productivity, making this a workplace perk that benefits the business as well as the workers. For this reason, increasing numbers of employers are offering personal concierge services to their employees.

In 2000, 26 of Fortune Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” offered personal concierge services versus just 15 companies in 1998

57% of businesses now offer some type of on-site personal service, such as an ATM, dry cleaner or travel agency

67% of workers would hire a personal assistant over a life coach to help complete their daily tasks

53% of employees would opt for a personal assistant rather than a personal trainer

As a professional concierge, whichever route you choose --personal or corporate-- you can have a peace of mind that it is a great business opportunity. After all, giving your clients the gift of time that they absolutely deserve is the greatest thing about this noble profession.

Do you know?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 18,000 concierges were employed in the United States in 2000. This number grows steadily by 16% from 2000 to 2010.

According to a recent study conducted by the Families and Work Institute (FWI), a nonprofit center for research that provides data on the changing workforce, it is now necessary for 78% of married couples to work in order to maintain the lifestyle that they desire.

The same study also discovered:
36% of workers say that they completely used up and dry at the end of the workday
85% of workers have daily family responsibilities to return to
70% of parents feel that they do not spend enough time with their children
Weekends are consumed by errands and housekeeping
