Becoming a Feng Shui Consultant
Starting a Feng Shui Consulting Firm
There are many myths surrounding Feng Shui and being a Feng Shui consultant.
Why Feng Shui is in High Demand Today
We live in a fast-paced society. In the past few decades, our priorities have been focusing on work and financial success more than family and personal health and well-being. We have been living lives that are out of balance. Slowly, we have also become more and more aware of this
imbalance and are looking for ways to set it right. Feng Shui offers us that chance.
Feng Shui is often called acupuncture for the home. Just as we need to align our bodies, we also need to bring harmony and balance into our physical space. This can appear to be an overwhelming task. Feng Shui helps us to recognize the problem, the goals and the steps we need to take to make them happen.
We are beginning to realize that our surroundings do affect us.
More and more people are beginning to throw around the word “energy.” At a time when we are burdened by stress, work, financial obligations and numerous responsibilities, many people need the help of a professional Feng Shui consultant. They need someone who can take a look at one’s home and lifestyle and find a way to make it more beneficial and more fulfilling.
Feng Shui is increasingly popular because it brings results. People are realizing that its design principles are practical and uplifting. Its philosophy is rewarding and fulfilling. Once people begin to put it to use, they begin to live Feng Shui.

So, what is a Feng Shui consultant?
As a Feng Shui expert, the need is to create a harmonious living or working space and to possibly make specific life changes for the betterment of the individual, family or work team. A Feng Shui consultant can focus on architecture, design, office spaces or any other physical, manmade area.
I believe in harmony, but I’m not a New Age enthusiast. So, I’m not that confident to become a Feng Shui consultant.
You do not have to be a new age enthusiast to be a Feng Shui practitioner. Just as Feng Shui is about the movement of chi, it is also about common sense. Most of us can imagine or have experienced the effect a messy, dark and stagnant room can have on us psychologically. We can also imagine the effect an open, clean and well-lit room would have on us. It is hard to disagree with the premise that the placement of things does affect our emotional and physical well-being.
There are many different Feng Shui schools or belief systems. There are many ways of interpreting Feng Shui and applying it to one’s life. Because Feng Shui’s roots are in Taoism, there is a spiritual aspect to it. However, this in no way makes it neither New Age nor does it mean that you are affiliated with Taoism or Buddhism.
Fast Feng Shui explains it nicely on their Frequently Asked Questions page:
Feng Shui is not a religion. It is a philosophy of interior and landscape design that originated in ancient China, and which is based on the Taoist belief in the interconnectedness of all things. It teaches us to be thoughtful about how we arrange and use the spaces we inhabit and work in, and reminds us to be attentive to and appreciative of the relationships and possessions that bless our lives.
What is Feng Shui, actually? Is it scientific?
Is it some sort of “voodoo” pseudo-science?
Is it proven?
Feng Shui practitioners will tell you that it is a science. Disbelievers
will tell you that it is nothing more than superstition. Howard
Choy and Associate Designers of
Responsive Architecture, have an article that touches on that
very same theme.
Here’s a look at what he has to say:
Feng Shui is not just a belief. We do not need to have faith for Feng Shui
to work. If we live in an environment with bad Feng Shui, sooner or later
it will affect us somehow. We may not be aware that it is Feng Shui at
work: we may just feel uncomfortable, or unsettled for some reason but
can’t put words to it.
Because Feng Shui involves a multi-disciplinary approach to its practice,
we should not look at it only from a Western scientific point of view.
Feng Shui is also an art. A large portion of Feng Shui analysis requires a
personal and subjective interpretation of the given data.
One needs to balance out the subjectivity with the objectivity of a given
situation. To the Chinese, the brain is tied to the heart (Xin-Yi), so
science and art can exist and should exist as one discipline, instead of
two separate entities.

Is Feng Shui no more than an ancient belief, which is already obsolete today?
If you search the Web with “Feng Shui” as keyword, you will immediately see that it is far from being obsolete. On the contrary, it is a practice that is exponentially growing. Every year, there are more Feng Shui schools and more Feng Shui consultants.
It is true that it is no longer identical to the Feng Shui that was practiced in ancient China. It has modernized and, in most cases, Westernized. It has adapted to our present context to better respond to our current needs. You could even argue that we are more in need of Feng Shui than ever before.
Some people even say Feng Shui is an ancient scam.
Every practice has its honest practitioners and its charlatans. Feng Shui is no different. However, with a little common sense and your own research, you will be able to see through the scam and recognize the practitioner for who he or she is. Likewise, an honest Feng Shui practitioner has seen firsthand the effects of Feng Shui and, odds are, you will too.
Do I need to learn about Chinese culture to learn about Feng Shui?
Since China is the birthplace of Feng Shui, it would be advisable to learn all you can about the country, its inhabitants, and culture. It is almost impossible to truly understand another culture from the inside. Your Feng Shui practice will be incomplete without this aspect.
Do I need to learn Chinese language to learn about Feng Shui?
Most Feng Shui practitioners in the West do not speak Chinese. That being said, Feng Shui uses many Chinese terms and vocabulary. You will need to become familiar with these as you will be using them in your practice.
How did Feng Shui come to exist? Some history?
Feng Shui is basically the practice of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony within the environment. It is an ancient Chinese practice, but is becoming increasingly popular in the West.
Feng Shui, in it earliest beginnings, relied upon astronomy to align humans and our surroundings with the universe. The Chinese used the celestial pole, determined by stars in the north and south, to align constructions on a north-south axis. Its main tenets come from Taoism, namely the belief that the earth is alive with its own energy, or chi. Concepts like yin and yang and the five elements also come from Taoism.
The earliest evidence of Feng Shui belongs to the West Han dynasty and dates back to around the third century BC. This southwestern region of China is known for its rugged terrain. These hills and mountains are what gave birth to the first established school of Feng Shui: the Form School.
This school sought to find areas with beneficial chi to live and place their burial grounds. Chi, also often written as qi, is an essential concept in Feng Shui. It is difficult to translate into English but can be understood as the flow of energy.
The Form School introduced the idea that the landscape is a living and breathing entity that has either beneficial chi or negative chi. Experts were able to assess the chi of any given area to determine if it was a positive place to build their homes or to place the burial ground.
Then, in 888 AD, Yang Yun Sung, further developed the Form School to create what is now considered the basis of modern Feng Shui: the Compass School. Some 100 years later, Wang Chih worked with these concepts and refined them to later become the father of the brand of Feng Shui that is studied today.
Feng Shui Schools
The Feng Shui schools can be broken down into three main areas:
· Traditional or Classical Feng Shui
· Black Sect Tantric Buddhism School of Feng Shui
· Intuitive/Modern Feng Shui
Now, how much you can earn as a Feng Shui consultant?
Your earning potential as a Feng Shui consultant has a lot to do with your demographics and the kind of services you wish to provide. Here’s a look at a few possible scenarios:
Let’s say that you live in southern California. There’s a lot of competition but also more demand. Researching other Feng Shui consultancies, you realize that you have various options when it comes to the money you charge for an onsite consultation.
· You can charge a flat rate of $500 for one consultation, whether it be for one hour or three.
· You can charge an hourly rate of $300 for a two-hour consultation and another 100 for each additional hour.
· You can charge based on square footage. A competitive price would be $500 for up to 1000 square feet and .50 for each additional square foot.
It is a safe prediction that a new Feng Shui consultant can expect to earn anywhere from $20,000 to $60,000 assuming a full-time engagement. Many "celebrity" Feng Shui consultants who have reached certain senior status earn anywhere from $150,000 to $250,000. The sky is, literally, the limit here.
