Reality TV Creator or Producer
Breaking Into and Succeeding as a Reality TV
Creator or Producer
Starting a Reality TV Show
Have been fascinated by reality TV shows but not sure whether you have
what it takes to be a creator?
You do not have to have any experience or background in television production. If you have made your decision to get involved in reality television production it would be highly recommended to get involved now, however. Of the professional show professionals we spoke to during the creation of this book, the one thing that most of them advised were getting involved with production if at all possible. There are some areas of the world where there is very little production going on and for these you will have to settle for writing the ideas and then pitching them for production.
There are sponsors and investors, so don’t worry about financing. As a matter of fact, most reality creators told us that they would recommend spending as little money on an idea as you can because once it is sold, the production company will change it around to meet their style and everything that you had into it may not be used.
It is true that sometimes in order to get an idea across you may have to pull together a small crew and go out to give a few interviews and take some footage of where your idea is staged to go. This should be done as cost effective as possible however. Once your idea is taken in and a production source agrees to produce it, they will become the sponsor and foot the bill completely.
So, what would make a great reality TV
show?
Much of knowing a good niche is research of what shows are currently popular and why the popularity of such shows are rising and falling. It is amazing how a show can be popular one year and then drop in status the next. This is the pure fickleness of the audience, but it is also your salvation as a reality show creator.
Because of this rise and fall of show popularities, there will always be a need for new ideas and fresh faces in the industry to keep the new ideas rolling. Never be afraid to speak-up with an idea you have, because sometimes the most absurd thoughts can become the next big television hit.
So, what is a TV show "creator"?
The “creator”, as they are referred to, creates the whole concept of a reality TV show. It is their brainchild. This creative process begins after a person decides to create a new television series. The show's creator is the main person who develops the individual elements of the reality series.
Now, why is reality TV Shows industry a big business?
Which genres or shows are in huge demand?
Looking up at the list we have provided for you it is easy to see that talent, love, torment, and sex sell. The key here is to have a good mixture of these as too much of any one just makes the overall show too cheesy and you will likely loose your audience within the first season if not the first pilot.
The reality producers involved in the writing of this book did not necessarily believe in any particular format. As the creator, it is your job to realize that your draw for your audience will be the extraordinary. There is not necessarily a particular genre as long as the audience can relate to it and it is presented in a fashion that is far beyond average.
Who the viewers are?
The basic demographics right now are the 18-34 television viewers. These are the folks who have grown up with reality, are comfortable with it and are within the lifestyle and age of the typical people who participate in these shows. As time goes on, it could be deduced that the demos will increase and we may find television reality based on older participants and contestants, but we will just have to wait and see how viewer trends go to make an accurate prediction.
Why do we watch them?
If you look at most of the reality show ideas that get produced, they most often revolve around a specific issue or event that everybody can relate to, then out of this is put together some type of a game or competition.. In a slight essence, one could say that they are game shows. But even more importantly, they could be considered a social experiment where the audience is not actually any part of the experiment beyond its pure enjoyment.
It is true that some things are more fun to play that to watch and it is said that in order to truly connect with your audience you should have both. To put it as bluntly as possible, the root reason viewers watch reality is because they have the appetite for being entertained by the unique human experience, beyond the perspective witnessing of their own life.
