Breaking Into and Succeeding as a Tanning Salon Owner
How to Start a UV or Sunless Tanning Salon Owner
How to Start a Sunless Mobile Tanning Service Business

If you've noticed the trend of salons on every corner and tanning services in every coupon book, you'll find it no surprise to hear that the beauty industry is as healthy as it's ever been. More than 12,000 spa locations across the United States generate total revenue of $11.2 billion. That number is poised to grow as more people, especially men, discover the joys of pampering themselves and looking good.

Skin care products and services are specifically doing well as more information about the anti-aging benefits of topical antioxidants and year-round moisturizer use have come to light. For example, from the year 2000 to 2001, facial cleanser sales jumped 58%, facial moisturizers sales rose 8%, and skin care lotions increased by 9%.

Tanning salons fit in everywhere. A university district, a shopping mall, the end of a grocery store warehouse—even a small shopping plaza in a residential area can easily house a tanning salon. In fact, you're probably better off locating your salon in an area where people run their weekly errands.

Students can enjoy a tanning session while their laundry is going through the spin cycle. Parents can get out of the tanning bed and walk over to pick up bread, milk, and eggs without even leaving the same parking lot. Anywhere where people have reason to be with a little spare time on their hands—and the desire to pamper themselves after a hard day running around town—is a good place to put a tanning salon.

One salon owner we interviewed for Success Profiles section has gone so far as to describe the tanning salon as a "neighborhoodish" business—people tend to visit the ones right where they live. Looked at from that point of view, you don't necessarily want to be in the business district. Where you want to be is next-door to your customers.

Good thing about this business is you can set up your tanning service anywhere, including your home or at your client's place (mobile tanning service).

The conventional idea of a tanning salon—electric beds irradiating clients with ultraviolet light—isn't technically impossible to set up at your house. Tanning beds and stand-up tanning booths are sold for home use, after all.

And if you prefer to offer sunless tanning, it's even easier to set up space in your home for that service. The issue you're going to run into is zoning. Most residential neighborhoods aren't zoned for commercial use, which means that you simply wouldn't be allowed to have customers coming to your house all day.

A flexible schedule is one of the big advantages of a mobile tanning salon. When you work out of a fixed location, you're paying rent and utilities regardless of whether your salon is open three, five, or seven days a week. But with a mobile salon you don't have that pressure. Your operating costs only accrue when you operate. So you have the flexibility of working as much or as little as you want.

With all those hypes in the media about UV rays causing skin cancer, you might be asking where this business is leading.

You might think that as more research connecting UV exposure to skin cancer comes to light, the tanning industry would suffer. But the opposite appears to be the case. Tanning salons are multiplying and growing more successful all the time. Why is that?

Maybe you're sick of hearing about the increasing number of Baby Boomers, but if you're going into the salon business, you should pay attention to them. As that significant portion of the population ages, demands for beauty products and services will only increase.

Also, more information has led to a boom in tanning precisely because we know more about the risks. Tanners unsure of how much tanning bed time is appropriate for their skin types will rely on you to advise them, and tanners concerned with their health increasingly turn to salon operators for information on UV-free tanning and skin care in general. As use of tanning beds decreases, the need for sunless tanning services and education is increasing.

And since the demand for a tan isn't going away, more commercial technology is being developed all the time to minimize the risks and discomforts associated with tanning. There has never been such variety of tanning beds, tanning lotions, bronzing sprays, moisturizers, even conditioners specifically designed to protect ones hair while tanning.

Such a proliferation of technology reflects our deep conviction that modern science will continue developing new tools to safely make our bodies our own, allowing us to look and feel beautiful—whatever "beautiful" means to each of us individually—without sacrificing our health and longevity. And you, as a tanning salon owner, will be poised to put those tools in your customers’ hands.

Now if you're wondering whether you can start this business with only $5,000, the answer is definitely yes.

As the risks associated with ultraviolet radiation become more well known and accepted as fact, those in search of a gorgeous tan are seeking sunless methods of achieving it. Enter "self-tanning," or "spray-on tans," the application, by high-volume low-pressure spray or by airbrush, of a harmless compound that reacts with the outer layer of skin to produce a tanned effect indistinguishable from that associated with hours of UV treatments.

A misting booth or airbrush compressor and a gallon of self-tanning solution cost only the tiniest fraction of what a tanning bed would cost you—and, since it won't increase your clients' risk of skin cancer, it costs your conscience nothing!

What's more, spray-on tanning systems can be perfectly portable (unlike a bulky, electricity-sucking tanning bed), which means you can operate a mobile tanning salon with no need for a permanent storefront location! You save money—and your clients enjoy the convenience of having you come to them—all for well under $5,000.

There are so many options on where and how to start the business and what packages to offer to customers:

  • Tropical atmosphere

  • Relaxed spa-like atmosphere

  • Athletic atmosphere (in gyms, athletic clubs)

  • Beach and casual atmosphere

  • Executive and professional atmosphere

  • Add-on in spas, gyms, clubs, resorts and hotels

  • Neighborhood atmosphere

Now, how much money can you make?

  • According to the National Tanning Training Institute, a monthly income of $21,000 based on eight beds doing twelve sessions each a day over 25 days, and another $1,000 monthly on retail product earnings are very possible.

Do you know?

  • In 2003, ResearchandMarkets.com stated that the swimwear and beachwear market was valued at $12.65 billion. They forecast nothing but growth for that industry right up through the year 2012—good news for you, since the market for tanning services and products goes hand-in-hand with an increase in bikinis and tank tops.

  • As for tanning in specific, an industry report stated that it's the industry worth $2 billion a year. It is estimated that some 28 million Americans make use of indoor tanning salons, of which there are some 25,000 across the States.

  • Sun care products, too, such as lotions, creams, and sprays, are part of an over $1 billion dollar industry whose products have been the fastest-growing revenue item for tanning salons over the past 10 years.
