Workout Video Creator and Producer

Breaking Into and Succeeding as a Workout Video Creator and Producer
Starting a Workout Video Series
Creating and Producing Fitness Videos

Have you ever bought a workout video that is so simple that even your children can exercise along? Of course, there are Jane Fonda, Billy Blank, Denise Austin and other celebrity fitness gurus out there, but more and more workout videos are created by down-to-earth instructors whose body types and skills are not so "celebrity looking."

This makes you wonder, "Can I become one? Can I create workout videos using my favorite routines?" The answer is yes.

Workout Videos are needed for all levels of fitness. Because of the need for more than one level, you can begin your workout video career producing videos for beginner level users, children and seniors.

People who need simple, low impact routines and would benefit from your fresh approach. You can also enlist the help of an aerobics professional in designing routines that are a fresh new twist on the moves you already know. Market your talent level as if you were your own target audience - sell your video to workout routine newbies and create your own successful market niche.

If you are concerned about how you look, good news is, you can produce workout videos no matter what your body type is. There are several quite successful workout video series geared toward many different body types and fitness levels.

There is even a series made for the extremely overweight, cast with nothing but extremely overweight exercisers. There is even a workout video that advocates Chair Dancing as a great activity for the truly sedentary folk just starting to get into fitness! If they can create a successful video series, so anybody can.

There are endless possibilities on the target markets and types of workout to offer:

  • Overweight people

  • "Couch potato" type

  • Children

  • Seniors

  • Teenagers

  • Pregnant women

  • Post-pregnancy

  • Alternative exercises, such as Yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Qong, Pilates

  • Dance exercises, such as Belly Dance, Ballroom Dance, Strip Tease Style, Jazz Ballet

  • Flexibility workout

  • Muscle toning workout

  • Endurance workout

  • Aerobics

  • Martial arts workout, such as kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, Karate

  • Creative exercises, such as Yoga with your dog

Start-up cost for workout video creation and production varies, which is the beauty in this business, as it means you can spend as little or as much as you wish. If you are a true novice in video production, you may want to budget  for hiring a professional to help in finding studio and distributing the videos.

You can spend as little as $10,000 to $16,000 to hire a professional production company to film, produce and market your first video. However, if budget is not an issue, many of the “better known” workout video series can cost as much as $50,000 to $150,000 to produce.

Of course, if you hire film school fresh graduates, you can expect to spend only a few thousands to begin with. To save costs even further, consider filming more than one at a time (multiples, sometimes as many as four sessions a day). Filming as many as three to five workout videos in one day would save you substantially.

Trends in Fitness Industry and Workout Video

The following trends show the increase of health and fitness-conscious establishments, with whom you can partner with in selling your workout videos to their members.

Ten years ago, there were an estimated 25,000 health clubs in the United States. Franchised clubs ("chain" clubs with more than one location, such as a Gold’s Gym or a World Gym) are said to operate as much as 40% of the health club market, with that number predicted to rise to as much as 50% in the last few years.

By 1998, you could find 14,100 health clubs listed in the United States Yellow Pages, an increase of over 1000 clubs from 1997's data. In 1999, there were as many as 22.5 million people enrolled in a gym of some kind, with female gym members making up 54% of that number. The gym industry totaled nearly $10 billion dollars in revenue as of 1999.

Now the latest statistics. According to an independent study done by the International Health, Racquet and Sports Club Association, there were 26,831 health clubs and fitness gyms in the United States as of
January 2005
.

The concept of the "women's only" gym was fairly new in the nineties, with "women's only" clubs making up a scant 5% of the health club market. With the recent popularity of Curves and other similar "women's only" targeted weight loss and fitness clubs, it will interesting to see how that number changes in the next set of statistics taken in 2009, ten years later. Today, we expect to see at least 15% of health clubs are targeting women members.

The "corporate wellness environment" has nearly 4,000 "corporate clubs" in the United States promoting everything from weight loss and stress management to smoking cessation, which reduces corporate health care costs by as much as 20%. According to FitnessWorld, more and more hospital systems are now including a gym or other health facility on site for both patient rehabilitation and staff use. Even the staid country club has begun to get into the health club scene, with over 4,000 adding a gym facility for its members by the late 1990s.

Also jumping on the fitness bandwagon are:

· Hospitality industry with over 6,000 fitness centers inside hotels as a service to their patrons

· Military (with everything from fitness centers to bowling alleys and golf courses being added to bases to promote fitness and active recreation)

· Senior housing and regular apartment / condo housing complexes (nearly 9,000 fitness facilities were found in complexes such as these in the early 2000s)

· Schools (colleges were among the fastest rising gym facility user and some kind of health club style facility has become a college standard)

Do You Know?

Whenever we talk about earning potentials, there are many things that come into play, which cannot be taken for granted. For instance, if you already have students at a gym or a local fitness group, more likely you’d be able to take advantage of them as your “captive audience.”

A few earning potential scenarios:

· With celebrity reputation, such as those fitness gurus and celebrities-turn-fitness gurus, you can expect to sell anywhere from 100 to 1,000 copies per day worldwide, earning you anywhere from $40,000 to $400,000 per month.

· With strong credential and reputation in fitness training or other alternative fitness (yoga, chigong, tai chi, martial arts, etc.), you can expect to sell anywhere from 40 to 100 copies per day, earning you anywhere from $16,000 to $40,000 per month.

· With moderate credential and reputation, you can expect to sell 20 to 50 copies per day, earning anywhere from $8,000 to $20,000 per month.

· With new or without any credential or reputation, you can expect to sell 3 to 10 copies per day, earning anywhere from $1,200 to $4,000 per month.

It is obvious that having your own workout video is very attractive financial, even if you only sell 3 copies per day. With the current technology, the cost can be as little as $1 per copy, which will earn you many many times over if you sell it $15 or $20 a pop.
